Star Wars: Disney CEO Not Ruling Out Future Trilogies Despite Comments By Company President

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talked about the need to think about the Star Wars films in a different light, especially when looking at it from the current trilogy format.

“I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn’t lock us into this three-act structure,” she added. “We’re not going to have some finite number and fit it into a box. We’re really going to let the story dictate that.”

Interestingly, in an interview with Variety afterward, Disney CEO Bob Iger intimated that the thought of abandoning the format may be a bit premature.

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Iger said when asked about the company distancing from the trilogy format. “She and I have said, ‘Well, maybe trilogies are too hard, so maybe we’ll make one film and then a sequel,’ but we don’t know.”

It is curious considering that they had announced not one, but TWO trilogies shortly after the release of The Last Jedi. One was to be helmed by Last Jedi director Rian Johnson; the other by the recently departed David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of Game of Thrones fame.
